EXHIBITION: Christ Church, Toxteth Park, 24 November – 15 December 2019

The season of Advent will be explored in a new piece created for Christ Church, Sefton Park, Liverpool.

Vessel is a sculptural work from Liverpool-based visual artist John Elcock inviting visitors to reflect on Advent, the four-week period of reflection traditionally leading up to to Christmas.

Vessel is situated in the chancel adjacent to the high altar, necessarily acting as a focus of contemplation but also offering a contemporary response to the church’s magnificent listed interior. Visitors are encouraged to sit in the oak choir stalls to view the artwork, in an experience the artist describes as follows:

“Vessel is essentially an exercise in discernment, in which the mystery of the Incarnation is explored. Advent is a time of waiting and preparation, it challenges us to be ready for its fulfilment in the Nativity. The artwork is intended as a catalyst to quicken this realisation.’

Christ Church is grade II-listed church of national importance, noted for its remarkable stained glass and WWI memorial brasses which are the finest in Liverpool. Its 170 foot spire adjacent to Sefton Park and Lark Lane is a significant local landmark.

John Elcock is a visual artist whose work is primarily concerned with landscape, the symbolism of birds and aspects of the divine. He has exhibited across the UK. His three collections of poetry are published by The Artel Press.
